Goal Setting

Specific: What do I want to accomplish?  Why do I want to accomplish this?  Who else is involved?
Measurable: How will I know when it's accomplished?  How can I track progress?
Attainable:  How can I accomplish this goal?  Is it possible?
Relevant:  Is this the right time? Does this goal really matter? Will it improve my life, work, etc?
Time-bound: When will this goal be accomplished?   How often do I take steps to reach the goal?

Examples of non-SMART goals:
1. " I want to be healthy."
2. "I want to be happier."
3. "I want to have more money"

Examples of SMART goals:
1. " Within 2 months, I will increase physical activity to 3 times per week."
2. "Within 6 months, I will develop and practice 3 new coping skills to decrease feelings of sadness."
3. "I will save $20 from each paycheck."

Some other tips on goal setting:
1. Write them down.
2. Share with someone you care about and who will help keep you accountable.
3. Re-examine goals frequently.  Check progress, are they still relevant at this time, have you met your goal?
4. Post goals somewhere you will see them daily.
5. Ask for help when you feel stuck.
